Gabriel is an NPC from a heavily homebrewed In Nomine campaign. In summary, in In Nomine angels and demons are fighting a cold war against each other, with all the intrigue, inter and intra-faction strife, backstabbing, and secret alliances one would expect to find in the cold war, with Earth as their battlefield. If you'd like to know more, here is the character creation doc I wrote up for the campaign.

Gabriel was a normal human, living his life, starting university and then going to and finishing university and all ready to start an internship when his younger brother goes from interested in to big into crypto to major cryptobro. He's from the Silicon Valley so this isn't the weirdest thing in the world to befall a guy, though Gabriel does despair for his younger brother especially because Ricardo-- now going by Ritz-- is acting pretty weird. But he doesn't seem to be losing money judging by the money going into their shared account and he needs to pay back his student loans... It seems to be going fine and it's not like he was an econ major, so. What does he know? Maybe it's fine.

It was Not Fine.

Ritz is found out to have been doing some extremely shady con work and also using a lot of that crypto to further purchase and sell illegal weaponry, which put him firmly in the crosshairs of doing shit he could be pretty easily arrested for. Ritz kills himself rather than face charges, which fucking sucks, and Gabriel despairs that he was a shitty older brother and should have looked more into what was going on. So that whole thing sucks. You'd think like, okay, but that's the end of that.

Except he keeps seeing... people with Ritz's mannerisms? Pulling the same shit? And the numbers in their shared account keep fluctuating? What the fuck is going is Ritz an evil ghost. Why is his brother an evil ghost-- actually no wait he understands 100% why his brother is an evil ghost.

(Or, he thought he did: actually his brother was possessed by a demon and what's happening is he keeps seeing the demon that possessed his brother and thinking its his brother. Gabriel has no fucking clue what's going on just that it sucks a lot.)

But he WANTS to track down his brother and maybe this time he can do right by him. Lay him to rest. Get him to at least stop scamming the living out of their savings and buying dangerous fuck-off weaponry. This leads into a series of bad dreams where-- well. In Nomine, Dreams are an ethereal realm that angels and demons can access, and also humans though the place is usually not really dangerous for humans beyond possible damage to their mental health. Usually being kind of the key word. Gabriel gets himself to the place where the former prince of Corruption had hell and heaven work together to obliterate him, shredding his forces.

Legion was a Shedim, which typically can only possess one person, but Legion grafted his forces to a kyriotate (angel that can possess multiple vessels) or something and basically forcibly started making those people Legion too. We are Legion and we are Many and all that jazz. There is some hope for Gabriel though-- forces are not usually self-animating. Legion was managing it through the unholy shedim/kyriotate fusion it made itself, but now there is no rest of legion. And furthermore, the force he received this way was an Ethereal force-- which is associated with memory, dreams, and skills. It's not the personhood (contained in celestial forces, for demons) or physicality (contained in the corporeal forces), which means hypothetically, Gabriel should be driving.

But he's one human and he's got memories that aren't his with extensive information about Hell in his head. Using Legion's knowledge and skills he's able to better track Ritz, but... Well, legion's memories and mannerisms are leaking. He's convinced he's just too dealing with some really shitty crazy ghost, as the Gabriel that is Legion also wants the same thing he does, tracking his brother and figuring out how to stop him, but... with the ethereal force, that means entering dreamland is dangerous for Gabriel, as that basically means his ethereal forces are driving.

He's a human still though, canonically, humans don't turn into demons.

Except Lilith.

But that's a weird, one time thing, right? Gabriel doesn't know shit about demons. It's ghosts. This whole thing is about stupid shitty ghosts, and he's not going to sleep for as long as it takes to get done some serious ghost busting. The ghost thinks it knows all this shit about demons because it's a fucking ghost, and people believed in demons and shit back then? Obviously. Clearly. Okay, we good then? He's not a demon and he's definitely not New Legion or anything. He's a living person, he doesn't do possession. He can't do possession.

Just in case though, he's never sleeping again.
